BEIJING GOES BLOODLESS

SYNOPSIS
Medical research now shows that patients, who receive less blood or no blood, have improved outcomes, with lower patient-care costs.
BEIJING GOES BLOODLESS is part of a multifaceted campaign that explores the latest transfusion-free techniques now available for a wide range of elective and emergency medical procedures.

The campaign includes a companion book, a web site, and following selected airings, teleseminars hosted by a team of medical experts. The film will be accompanied by both a printed educational resource guide and an online, downloadable guide.

After the worldwide AIDS epidemic cast a spotlight on blood transfusions in the 1980s, efforts to eliminate the unseen risks of transfusions intensified. As late as June 2005, the World Health Organization acknowledged, “The chance of receiving a safe transfusion…varies enormously from one country to another.”

Bloodless surgery and medicine provide proven, documented diagnostic and treatment alternatives to patients, and raise the standards of safety and efficiency in patient care.

Blood is amazingly complex. One textbook describes blood as “the only organ in the
body that’s a fluid,” and as “a living transportation system.” What makes it so special?

The film considers the long and often controversial history of blood transfusions and explains why a growing number of hospitals now offer bloodless medicine and surgery.

Significantly, BEIJING GOES BLOODLESS chronicles the efforts of remarkable
mainland doctors who are forging new standards for health care. And it follows the
development of China’s first bloodless surgical programs, in collaboration with the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery, Pennsylvania Hospital.

The documentary’s staff earned the trust of and gained unprecedented access to the
story of a critically ill patient who requires a seemingly impossible procedure—a bone marrow stem cell transplant without blood transfusion.

The film tells the story of what is behind the bloodless surgery movement and explores the issues raised.
